What is iCan?
iCan will give towns and cities in the North East the opportunity to be the first in the UK or probably the world to eliminate food poverty. Not only that we reckon it could be done in a year.
Read a report from The Sunderland Echo (February 2011) on iCan, and follow iCan on Facebook and Twitter.
So how is it achieved?
Through the donation of a single can of food from you (and everyone else).
Why do we want cans?
You can drop cans and they won’t break – that means they’re good for transporting
We can keep cans for days, weeks, even months and the food inside remains edible – that means they’re good to store
We don’t have to spend money keeping cans at the right temperature for the food inside to remain edible
Canned food can cost next to nothing – have you priced a tin of baked beans or peas?
You can get your ‘5 a day’ – fruit (oranges, pears and apricots) in cans; veg – peas, beans, carrots, even potatoes) in cans; you can get meat and fish in cans. You can even get bread in a can!
Therefore we can feed hungry people almost purely from food that comes in cans.
And you know what’s really great; everybody has cans of food at home in the kitchen – including you
Remember too that cans are environmentally friendly; the metal in them can be used again and again.
